I don't know about the rest of the places, but I would highly recommend making reservations for your Grand Teton nights.Ĭlosure dates for campgrounds inside Grand Teton Park are: Btw, do you think we need to book ahead campgrounds for Grand Tetons, Rocky Mountain NP, Aspen and Telluride too? or those places would with less tourists?<<< >We plan to visit the Grand Tetons too of course and much more places. I would NOT say in Idaho and drive back over Teton Pass twice a day. If you can't get in, check out the nice campground at Dubois (for the Tetons) or the former KOA south of Jackson. Make reservations on the new (to those campgrounds) site. Since you are coming from the north, IF it were me, I'd do a couple of nights on the north side of Yellowstone, maybe a night at Headwaters/ Flagg Ranch in between (full hookups and free hot showers) and then something in GTNP (I do love Gros Ventre). "And yes, we're following the foliage from north (Glacier NP) to the south (Telluride) so it is going to be amazing!! I'm so exited to see it already!" Do you know about RMNP's ticketed entry this year? Plan ahead! I love the Telluride area.e, You will need reservations until you are willing to boondock at NF sites. Because of Covid-19 shutting down international travel, Americans swarmed to NPs, especialy western NPs. Last year was a record year for camping in western parks. "Btw, do you think we need to book ahead campgrounds for Grand Tetons, Rocky Mountain NP, Aspen and Telluride too? or those places would with less tourists?" Re "sampling" - local chefs to a Taste of the Tetons on that Sunday too in the square in Jackson. There's also a great art festival around that time in Jackson with great events including a big vendor fair on Sunday. With the spectacular mountains, the elk bugling, moose wandering around and lots of other wildlife, it's pretty much paradise in the fall. Yellowstone has a few stands of aspens/ cottonwoods but nothing like in Jackson Hole. The fall foliage is simply gorgeous there. I certainly wouldn't miss fall in the Tetons. Not that there's going to be better availability in the Tetons than Yellowstone, but worth a try. I hate back and forth driving in Yellowstone because it doubles the drive time in a park that already requires a lot of driving - over 300 miles of road. I either start in Jackson and loop up and back, or the reverse, start north and loop down and back. I like to do a big loop including the Tetons and driving the Grand Loop Road in Yellowstone the way the first visitors did (in the historic yellow buses) minimizes the driving. Great photos of moose too, including a pair bedding down in a campsite for the day. I drove through every day (moose watching) and was shocked to see it stay full until the end. Until last year, it was mostly empty in the fall, but last year (due to the Covid-19 crowds) it was booked every day until the last day. My favorite time of year to go! If you don't need full hookups, the Gros Ventre campground is gorgeous with the golden leaves of cottonwoods above and moose wandering through the campground every morning and afternoon. The fall foliage in the Tetons is gorgeous at that time of year. You will be limited as far as pullouts and parking.Īre you planning to visit GTNP and stay in the Tetons? If not, you should. Driving an RV around Yellowstone for the day is not the best idea. Save the rental RV for a non-Yellowstone vacation. It may be cheaper to skip the rental RV route and just rent a car and stay in lodging. Is this a rental? If so, you may want to do the math.
